Meibomian Gland Imaging

Meibography is a diagnostic test that is used to visualize the meibomian glands in the eyelids. The meibomian glands are located in the eyelids and produce oil (meibum) that helps to keep the surface of the eye lubricated. When these glands become blocked or infected, it can cause a variety of symptoms, including dry eye, eye irritation, and inflammation of the eyelids.

Meibography is performed using a specialized camera that takes images of the meibomian glands. The camera uses infrared light to create a detailed image of the glands, which can help the doctor to identify any abnormalities or blockages. Meibography is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, and the patient can usually return to their normal activities the same day.

Meibography is a useful tool for diagnosing and managing meibomian gland dysfunction, a common cause of dry eye. It is also used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for dry eye and to guide the placement of punctal plugs, which are small devices that are inserted into the tear ducts to help retain moisture in the eye.
